Website accessibility is important for local government websites because it ensures that everyone can access the information and services provided by the government. Citizens use local government websites for countless activities such as learning about upcoming elections and government meetings, filing complaints, making payments, viewing materials from the local library, and more.

Local governments are required to comply with Section 508 of the American Disability Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). These guidelines ensure that websites are accessible to people with disabilities as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In addition, New York State Policy NYS P08-005 establishes minimum accessibility requirements for web-based Information and applications developed, procured, maintained, or used by state entities. The goal of the policy is to encourage a more inclusive state workforce and increase the availability of governmental services to all members of the public.

Accessible websites not only ensure service to the public, but they also ultimately work better for everyone. They are often faster, easier to use and appear higher in search engine rankings.
